Each year the Shreveport Geological Society participates in the Red River Revel by organizing the Mock Geological Dig, courtesy of Security Exploration. SGS members volunteer to introduce young people to the excitement of scientific discovery. Rocks, minerals and fossils are scattered in a giant sand box that is roped off in squares, just like a real geological dig!

Children up to grade 6 are encouraged to claim a section and hunt for quartz, pyrite, sharks' teeth, and polished rocks for a 15-30 minute shift, after which volunteers reseed the dig.  Young adults high-school- to college-aged are encouraged to volunteer at the dig along with SGS members to learn more about rocks and minerals and to understand how important science is in our community.
